Solar Decathlon China 2021

The Competition

The Solar Decathlon China 2021 (SDC21) is an international competition where collegiate teams design and build solar-powered, net-zero energy buildings to push the boundaries of sustainability. During the SDC21 event in Zhangjiakou, China, our houses will be used as a space to showcase sustainable technologies and innovative design to the public, in addition to being judged by the Decathlon competition committee. Soon after the competition, the space will be used to receive guests during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games while continuing to be a source of energy data and systems monitoring for further research.

Our Team

In collaboration with the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), our Solar Decathlon team will be designing and building a net-zero energy home for the Solar Decathlon China 2021 (SDC21) competition in Zhangjiakou, China. By experimenting with various design configurations and testing methods of integrating energy, water, and HVAC systems, our team will arrive at a final product that innovates energy and space, maximizes sustainability, and ensures occupant well-being. With this programmatic context in mind, we are designing a structure that can easily be modified to accommodate a variety of events and functions and is able to withstand changes in program, occupancy, and location through the integration of innovative design and engineering techniques.

Our team is currently in the process of further developing and finalizing a general architectural form that best represents the overarching principles and guiding narrative of the project. In the next few months, our members will be working hard on design iterations, technical engineering tasks, and further research on cultural and architectural context, marketability, and affordability.
