Leadership & Management

Project & Organization Management members include but are not limited to UCB undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, out-of-school members, advisors, and professionals fulfilling advisory and management roles.

Tasks

  • Overseeing overall project progress in meetings, team check-ins, and build-days
  • Ensuring teams have needed resources, such as contact with faculty/expert advisories. 
  • Teach necessary programs, design principles, construction procedures

The Tenancy and Ownership Policy Manager will coordinate all major non-technical efforts related to the completion of the first pilot home, and long-term initiatives. They will work closely with the City of Richmond, our partners (Tentmakers, CARE Association, etc.), interested homeowners, and potential occupants.

 

Tasks

  • Searching for and interviewing potential occupants and homeowners to understand their specific needs and desires
  • Attend monthly City of Richmond Homeless Task Force Meetings
  • Understanding renter and landlord protections that apply to THIMBY by communicating with the Richmond Rent Board Attorney and other legal council
  • Leading the initiative to draft short-term legal agreement between THIMBY, Tentmakers, the homeowner, and the occupant
  • Working with the same parties to determine the most favorable and viable ownership and financing model after the execution of the above short-term agreement

Qualifications

  • Interest in building and zoning codes, building certifications, partnering with community and non-profit organizations, increasing access to Basic Needs services
  • Deep knowledge and/or passion in sustainability, environmental justice, built environment, human impact, environmentally and socially conscious design, and affordable housing

  • Past experience or knowledge in tenant protections, zoning codes and policy, real estate, outreach, and/or community organizing
The Workforce Development & Training Manager will be in charge of creating the THIMBY construction curriculum. They will be the administrative point-of-contact for anyone currently working on THIMBY under any paid training program, and will seek out new training participants in the spring. They will be in frequent contact with RichmondBUILD, Rebuilding Together (RTEBN), Rising Sun, and the Bay Area Rescue mission.

Tasks

  • Researching how other existing training programs are run
  • Developing an intuitive format for the THIMBY construction curriculum
  • Synthesizing the content written/produced during construction into the curriculum
  • Communicating with potential instructors and understanding their needs
  • Producing recruitment materials  for future training program participants
  • Writing an application for future training program participants

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Deep knowledge and/or passion in sustainability, environmental justice, built environment, human impact, environmentally and socially conscious design, and affordable housing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in the nonprofit space
  • Prior experience with teaching/instruction

The Business & Financial Model Manager will work closely with the Tenancy and Ownership Policy Manager and Tentmakers, Inc. to research and plan out the future financing model for THIMBY homes (a combination of private loan, down payment assistance, public subsidy, revenue from rent, etc.).

Tasks

  • Research public funding sources that THIMBY may be eligible for
  • Produce a report on the income distribution within the Richmond populations that we will be working with 
  • Foster connections with local banks and other lending institutions
  • Meet with interested homeowners and potential occupants for input on the financing model
  • Estimate the capacity for wealth and income building that these homes and associated training programs will bring to individuals and the community

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge or passion in the areas of social entrepreneurship, affordable housing, real estate, and public policy
  • Ability to work efficiently independently and in a team

The Treasurer will be responsible for ensuring the project is on budget, updating the budget as needed, approving purchases, and submitting purchase requests to the appropriate funding source. They will also be responsible for writing the budget for future funding applications.

  • Tracking sources/uses of funds
  • Processing purchase requests in a timely manner
  • Streamlining the purchase request process where possible
  • Writing budgets for funding applications

Qualifications

  • Ability to organize lots of information clearly for others to access and for record-keeping
  • Highly proactive and responsive
  • Prior experience or a strong desire to learn about the administration of grant funds

Construction

The Construction Manager will plan and execute construction and assembly of the home. They will advise and oversee the construction process by attending all build days, making decisions on the form and structure of the building, and handling communications with inspectors, contractors, and volunteers on-site.

Tasks

  • Creating construction plans and timelines
  • Creating and editing scopes of work for volunteers
  • Overseeing and leading build days 
  • Ensuring all materials, tools, and equipment are on-site prior to each build day
  • Securing necessary permits and licenses for construction and design
  • Teach necessary programs, design principles, construction procedures

Qualifications

  • Interest in energy and water systems, renewable energy, construction, structural loads, construction safety and procedures, etc.
  • Deep knowledge and/or passion in sustainability, environmental justice, built environment, human impact, environmentally and socially conscious design, and/or affordable housing 
  • Ability to work efficiently independently and in a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Able to commit at least 10 hours / week (~6 hrs on Saturday or Sunday)

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Past experience or knowledge in building construction, construction management, MEP systems, structural systems and evaluations
  • Knowledge in carpentry, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and/or plumbing systems

The Design & Planning Team Lead will manage and oversee structural, electrical, and mechanical designs, plans, and drawings. They will ensure that all existing plans are practically consistent with one another, adhere to consistent formatting guidelines, etc. They will incorporate necessary revisions to plans during the construction process and will create, or delegate the creation of as-built drawings for components of the structure that were not prior to construction.

Tasks 
  • Create/edit drawings in Revit and/or AutoCAD as necessary
  • Print and bring the necessary plans to each build-day 
  • Track necessary on-the-job revisions to the plans and help verify if they are safe and adhere to ANSI 119.5 and other relevant standards
  • Meet with advisors and/or inspectors prior to major construction milestones to ensure plans adhere to ANSI 119.5 and other relevant standards

The MEP Systems Lead will manage and oversee the electrical and plumbing rough-in of the home, and installation of appliances, floor heating system, greywater filtration, and solar system installation. They will delegate tasks as needed and will work closely with the Design and Planning lead to ensure all Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing (MEP) plan sets are accurate and up-to-date
Tasks
  • Producing a comprehensive bill of materials for all components of the MEP system
  • Working with materials procurement coordinators to ensure all the correct components are purchased
  • Researching product spec sheets and installation guides
  • Create/edit Revit and AutoCAD drawings as necessary
Qualifications
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, water reuse, and MEP systems
  • Deep knowledge and/or passion in sustainability, sustainability, environmental justice, built environment, human impact, environmentally and socially conscious design, and affordable housing

The Interior and Exterior Design Lead will oversee the design, fabrication, and assembly of custom furniture as well as interior/exterior façade and color/material choice. They will also be in charge of coordinating the installation of the furniture and interior finishings during the latter part of the construction.  
Tasks
  • Finalizing design and then constructing custom furniture
  • Overseeing the research and purchase of non-custom furniture and interior finishings
  • Frequent trips to reclaimed material suppliers to see what’s available
Qualifications
  • Interest in architectural design, woodworking, and interior design
  • Deep knowledge and/or passion in sustainability, sustainability, environmental justice, built environment, human impact, environmentally and socially conscious design, and affordable housing

The Visuals Lead will use computer-aided drafting software to translate drawings to BIM models. They will integrate proposed designs into renderings of exterior and interior spaces and work closely with the community engagement and media team members to incorporate these into shareable content.
Tasks 
  • Create renderings of exterior and interior spaces
  • BIM modeling, translating Rhino drawings into Revit models
Qualifications

The Materials Procurement Coordinator will coordinate with Design & Planning teams to manage the timely procurement and transport of construction materials.  
Tasks
  • Researching materials and building components
  • Contacting building suppliers and organizations to secure materials
  • Working closely with the Treasurer to ensure proposed items stay in budget
Qualifications

The Transportation Coordinator will work with the BMC leads to manage transportation to Richmond Field Center and material suppliers. They will also coordinate construction crews in respect to construction needs, space limitations, and construction safety knowledge of the team.

  • Announcing scheduled trips to members and managing volunteer sign up sheet
  • Tracking which members and volunteers will assist in construction days
Qualifications

Community Engagement

The Publicity Manager will be responsible for directing the production of all THIMBY-specific communications, informational content creation, etc. They will be a part of the SHAC media committee and will be the point of contact within the committee for information about the current progress. 

Tasks

  • Develop a detailed and consistent community outreach strategy
  • Write and design the content in the monthly SHAC newsletter and for any ad hoc content
  • Produce a comprehensive project infographic for community members
  • Build channels within UC Berkeley and Richmond to disseminate information about THIMBY
  • Coordinate any events related to the build-out, interviews with news outlets, etc.
  • Organize all generated content so that is easily accessible

Qualifications 

  • Strong interest in sustainability, media, community organizing
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, willing to “put themselves out there”
  • Able to commit 8-10 hours / week
We are looking for a highly creative graphic designer who can take conceptual ideas and create visual representations, both in print and electronic media. Our ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of current design software and skilled with every step of the design process from concept to the final deliverable. Collaborating with multiple teams, the graphic designer should be able to take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them into a design that connects. The THIMBY graphic designer will work within the media committee and closely with the SD graphic designer to ensure consistent design language across SHAC content.
Tasks
  • Work on a wide range of projects and media, using various computer software to visualize and develop innovative graphic designs
  • Obtain input from the management, ensuring designs meet organizational standards and brand expectations, express ideas accurately, and represent SHAC or client appropriately
  • Examine existing processes, identifying flaws and creating solutions to improve design capabilities
  • Collaborate, brainstorm, and strategize with multiple teams or clients for a wide range of materials that may include web pages, presentations, programming collateral, signage, internal communication, newsletters, and marketing materials
  • Translate strategic direction into high-quality design within an established brand identity
  • Develop concepts by hand or with software, and execute original content determining ideal usage of color, text, font style, imagery, and layout

We are searching for a talented social media manager to represent THIMBY and SHAC. The social media manager will be required to run advertising campaigns and drive engagement by creating high-quality original content. You should also engage influencers, manage our community by responding to comments, and oversee our customer service across all platforms. They will work within the media committee and closely with the THIMBY graphic designer as well as the SD Social Media Manager.

Tasks
  • Running social media advertising campaigns
  • Formulating high-quality novel written and visual content for each social media campaign
  • Building a social media presence by maintaining a solid online presence
  • Monitoring the company’s brand on social media
  • Building brand awareness by engaging relevant influencers

We are looking for a goal-oriented and organized video producer to manage video projects from inception to completion. To be successful as a video producer, you should have excellent time management and interpersonal skills. A top-notch video producer combines creativity with meticulous planning to create successful videos. Videos will include promotional content, interviews, and instructional videos for the construction curriculum.

  • Assisting in the creation and refinement of scripts, project concepts, and other materials

We are searching for a passionate fundraising manager with excellent leadership skills and networking abilities. The fundraising manager will be responsible for building good relationships with prospective donors, communicating with the broader public and internal teams, finding relevant grants, and delegating tasks. You should be well organized, proactive, and have the ability to inspire those around you. A great fundraising manager should have sharp public speaking skills and be able to deliver presentations to a range of audiences. The Fundraising Coordinator will work closely with the Business & Financial model manager and Project Treasurer.
Tasks
  • Conducting research on fundraising opportunities and available grants
  • Writing funding proposals and submitting these to potential donors
  • Coming up with ingenious ways to raise awareness
  • Implementing a variety of marketing strategies and promotional campaigns
  • Organizing and attending non-profit events and networking with relevant stakeholders
  • Establishing good relationships with staff, members of the public, and the media
